In 2014, I had the opportunity to work with Gregg Buchbinder, the CEO of Emeco, on a special material formulation for the iconic Broom Chair designed by Philippe Starck. The goal was to take a very sustainable, noteworthy product, and produce a more natural appearance. We spent over a year developing prototypes and eventually succeeded in creating the visual look we were after. Made from 75% waste polypropylene, 15% sawdust, and pigment free. As Gregg told me, “It’s okay to use plastic, if the plastic is from waste, you design something useful, and it will last decades”.
